this underneath the first bight. Take the working end over the top of the larger bight just formed, and
around behind the standing part, before bringing the working end back down over the right-hand side

of the first, smaller, bight. Tuck it in and out of that bight so as to weave it under the right-hand side of
the large loop. Now take the working end to the top of the knot (figure 46.1) and pass it down behind
the knot and up through the centre, while tucking the standing end down into the bottom of the large
loop, up behind the rest of the knot (figure 46.2) and back up through the eye of the carrick bend
together with the working end (figure 46.3). Then work the knot towards the eye and draw tight all

  parts (figure 46.4).

Diamond knot, on four strands: holding the four strands in your left hand, form a bight in each and
hold them secure between your thumb and forefinger. Then take each strand anticlockwise past its
adjacent bight and up through the next (figures 47.1–47.3) and pull all working ends together to form

  the finished knot.

Diamond plait, diamond hitching or continuous diamond knotting: can be used to form a covering for
any cylindrical object. It is comprised of one diamond knot on top of another. The plait can be formed
by including both single and double diamond knots, and a tighter effect created by making crowns

between the diamonds; see also diamond knot.
