How is the modification different from Sun's? The change is
more fluid and without the interruptions caused by extending the
left arm and following into the second toe-in. In the modification,
instead of extending the left arm you immediately "wrap" under
it and, instead of the final toe-in, you bring your right foot to the
left ankle suspended, which permits a somewhat faster swing back.
A further modification can be glimpsed in the style of Wang
Shu-chin. On the final turn back from the suspended foot, instead
of placing the right foot down immediately, he curves it in a circle
upward and then down (Figs. 335-337).
What is the function of the Single Change ? Kuo always took
pains to state that it did not mean that you hit your enemy in a
specific way. Rather it was a change permitting a rapid transition
to another direction, which, if perfected, would make your re-
sponse to an alien action a reflex not susceptible to analysis of how
one did it. But if the reader still desires an explicit use, think simply
