You might also visit the ruins of
Ross Castle, an excellent example of
the stronghold of an Irish chieftain
during the Middle Ages. The date of
its foundation is uncertain, but it was
probably built in the late fifteenth
century by one of the O’Donoghue
Ross chieftains. Perhaps visit the
Gap of Dunloe, a beautiful glacial
pass. Your driver/guide will suggest
a lunch spot either in Killarney or nearby.
After picking up the Gents, enjoy a lovely drive along the scenic Ring of Kerry as you return to
your accommodations.
Proposed Accommodations: Park Hotel Kenmare
Day 8: On to Ballyfin via the Rock of Cashel or Kinsale. It’s about 3 hrs from Kenmare to
Ballyfin, located in Co. Laois near the center of the country. We suggest you consider a stop
along the way at one of the most
important historical sites in Ireland,
the Rock of Cashel. The ‘Rock’ is a
prominent green hill, banded with
limestone outcrops that rise from a
grassy plain on the outskirts of the
town. The fortifications include
sturdy walls, which encircle an
enclosure that contains a complete
round tower, a roofless abbey and
the finest 12-century Romanesque
chapel in Ireland. For more than
1000 years, the Rock of Cashel was
a symbol of power and the seat of kings and churchmen who ruled over the region.
Alternatively, you could stop en route in the delightful seaside resort town of Kinsale and enjoy
lunch at Fishy Fishy Restaurant, a landmark dining spot on the Cork Coast. Check out the
remains of Charles Fort, located just outside town, and learn about the Battle of Kinsale. Arrive
to Ballyfin mid-to-late afternoon in time for check-in and enjoy the balance of the afternoon at
leisure.
