Proposed Accommodations:
CONG/COUNTY MAYO – Ashford Castle: Located on the shores of Loch Corrib near the
border of Counties Galway and Mayo, Ashford
Castle is one of the most exceptional, five-star
castle hotels in the British Isles. The original
castle was built in 1228 by the House of Burke.
More than six centuries later in 1860, the estate
was purchased by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness.
Guinness added the two Victorian wings and
expanded the estate to a total size of 26,000
acres. The castle was sold by the Guinness
family in 1939 and was converted into a luxury
hotel. Since then, it has changed hands several
times and was briefly owned by a consortium of
Irish-American investors. In is now owned by London-based Red Carnation Hotels, which has
invested heavily in a major refurbishment. Wonderful oak paneling, exquisite antiquities and
fine antique furnishings adorn the many public spaces including the leisurely drawing room and
refined Prince of Wales Cocktail Bar. Ashford Castle offers a huge range of activities and
country sports, including falconry, fishing on Lough Corrib, clay pigeon shooting, horseback
riding, an exclusive 9-hole golf course and a modern health center comprised of a whirlpool,
sauna, steam room, fully equipped gymnasium and lake view conservatory. The Formal Gardens
are restored, there are incredible walks along the Lakeshore and one in particular leads to the
Chalet—built by Lord and Lady Ardilaun of the Guinness Family in the late 1800s. Fine and
casual dining options are available. www.ashford.ie
