2016 was a pivotal year for Barclays, embarking on one of its
largest restructurings in its history designed to make the
bank smaller, better capitalised, and less leveraged and
more geographically anchored on its core UK and US
geographic markets. In addition the bank had to contend
with regulatory pressures as well as the effects of Brexit.
Diagrams 7 and 8 set the scene in terms of the restructuring
by showing the life cycles of Barclays’ branches and
geographic markets and technology developments as well
as funds flow.

In terms of the life cycles of the branches and African
markets both, although at different stages of their life cycles,
are seen as requiring too great an investment or simply
using up too great an amount of funds.
