Reading the Case
Read and reread the case. Become familiar with the facts
featured in the case and the organisation’s situation. The
object of the exercise is generally, to apply the knowledge
you have accumulated to the analysis of the case material
and answer any questions that might be asked based on it.
To help in this analysis it is useful to take notes as you read
the case and highlight the relevant facts and figures.
However, systematising this information or data collection
can be daunting so a number of questions are provided to
help the process of analysis move forward (See How To
Read A Case Study).
1. Who is the decision maker in this case, and what is
their position, perspectives and responsibilities?
2. What are the issue(s) and what is their significance for
the organization?
3. How did these issues develop?
4. What is the timescale associated with these issues and
what is their consequence, impact or resolution?
5. What is the urgency associated with the situation?
6. What are the possible solutions and what are the
consequences of the various paths of action?
If the case questions have been provided, they should be
examined in terms of what clues they offer for indicating the
examiners thoughts and potential issues that need to be
resolved (See Case Assignments).
