PESTEL deals with questions concerning:
• What factors in the general (wider) environment are
affecting the organisation?
• Which of these are the most important either presently
or in the future?
PESTLE is forward looking and scenarios are ‘supposed’ as to
what might happen in the future. Some factors are not
known today but ultimately, you want to understand what
potentially could happen in the environment you are
operating in.
Political Environment
How and to what degree does government intervene in the
economy. This can include – government policy, political
stability or instability in overseas markets, foreign trade
policy, tax policy, labour law, environmental law, trade
restrictions and so on.
Political factors often have an impact on organisations and
how they do business. Organisations need to be able to
respond to the current and anticipated future legislation,
and adjust their marketing policy accordingly. Factors for

• Nationalisation/Privatisation
• Regulation/Deregulation
• Public Policy to Industry
