DIAGNOSTICS
SWOT
Essentially a case is a story comprising multiple elements. In
a sense a puzzle with multiple pieces none of which have a
straight edge. Solving this kind of puzzle is difficult but a
SWOT analysis can be a good step on the way.
SWOT analysis is used in an inordinate number of
disciplines and situations. Its appeal lies to a great extent in
its ease of use and understanding. However, it is a limited
diagnostic tool. True it may promote brainstorming but it
does not provide answers to the issues under examination.
SWOT analysis is used to examine what an organisation
does well or badly internally through its strengths and
weaknesses whilst the external environmental factors -
opportunities and threats are assessed on how they impact
on the organisation.
SWOT should not be cast in stone. It has serious limitations
but it does also have great advantages not the least of which
is its ability to allow the user to enumerate factors that are
critical to the organisation.
