The Case Method
The case method is a teaching, learning philosophy that combines
knowledge acquisition with significant student involvement.
“The case method is based on a philosophy of professional education
which associates knowledge directly with action (Boehrer, 1995). This
philosophy rejects the doctrine that students should first learn
passively, and then, having learned, should apply knowledge. Instead,
the case method is based on the principle that real education consists
of the cumulative and unending acquisition, combination and
reordering of learning experiences.”
What’s on offer?
The case study is a real life account of what happened to an individual,
group, firm or any component of society over time.
The case-based approach is used to aid understanding of various
situations that managers may face.
For example:
• changes in the competitive environment,
• ethical issues,
• corporate or product strategies
•
These allow the application of theoretical concepts to be
demonstrated, thus bridging the gap between theory and practice.
