TEACHERS NOTE: Information Gaps – John’s account does not stipulate that the Capernaum
was the set destination of the disciples he is describing the direction they are traveling; north
towards Capernaum. Both accounts were written after the actual events occurred, providing a
record for posterity. Because it is written a record of previous events, the notations capture
the intent and actual outcome of the events.
The account provided in Mark 6:45 is accurate, the disciples were instructed to travel to
Bethsaida where the Messiah intended to meet them. In actuality, because of a storm,
referenced by both authors (Mark 6:48, John 6:18) the disciples never reached Bethsaida.
There is a second information gap between verse 21 and 22 following the storm. John
describes the severity of the storm and Jesus walking on the sea which added to the fear of
disciples. After the Messiah calms the hearts of the disciples the details of the account shift to
the immediate landing of the ship but it does not reveal the location. The account continues
the day following in Capernaum, omitting an entire day.
The Gospel of Mark does not capture the landing in Capernaum but does give details about the
landing of the ship in Gennesaret and a full day ministry to the sick in the villages located there.
(Mark 6:53-56).
