P. 62

John 6:22 The day following, when the people which stood on the other
side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one
whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his
                     disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;
John 6:23 (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the
place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)
John 6:24 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither
his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for
                                                          Jesus.

               Lesson Notes:

(John 6:22-24) – “The day following” is one day after the healing miracles in the villages of
Gennesaret captured in the Gospel of Matthew and Mark but not in John. (Matthew 14:34-36,
Mark 6:53-56) John’s gospel proceeds with the events following the stop-over in Gennesaret
continuing the journey northward to Capernaum. The destination to Bethsaida noted in Mark
6:45 is likely forfeited because of the storm.
The multitude that was fed in the unnamed desert place realized that Jesus was no longer
among them. They recalled how He sent His disciples away in a boat, but He remained behind
to send the people home and then entered a mountain alone to pray. (Mark 6:45, John 6:15)
When the disciples departed by ship, there were no boats left for anyone to make a journey
across the Sea of Galilee. Overnight, other boats arrived from Tiberias to take shelter, (perhaps
because of the windstorm on the sea), near the desert place where the multitude ate the fish
               and loaves.
The details emphasize the intense search and investigation made by members of the five
thousand households to find the “Prophet” because they wanted to make Him their king. (John
6:15) When He could not be found, they left the desert place in ships setting sail to nearby
               Capernaum hoping to find Him.

John 6:25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they
said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
John 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye
seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the
                                                loaves, and were filled.
John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which
endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for
him hath God the Father sealed.
John 6:28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work
                                                   the works of God?
John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God,

                                                                                                           61
