(John 6:30-31) – Unsatisfied with the stated requirement to labor for the meat of everlasting
life, Jesus-Messiah is asked to provide more signs. To further His credibility as the Prophet they
want to make King they that He would produce manna, the miracle they believe to be the
bread of Heaven. A manna miracle would help them to authenticate Jesus-Messiah as the
promised prophet to stand in the place of Moses. (Deut. 18:18)
(John 6:32-33) – The Messiah immediately corrects their perception about the bread in the
wilderness and the true bread from Heaven. To emphasize the truth, He uses the double verily
to call to their attention to a correction of false doctrine or information. The people have
misapplied the assignment of something earthly, elevating it to the status of heavenly.
The wilderness mana was earthly in form and in purpose. All terrestrial elements will
eventually expire along with their usefulness. Manna was an earthly, terrestrial element. It
had a short shelf life lasting no more than a day. It was never reproduced or used again after
serving its purpose in the wilderness.
Jesus-Messiah makes it clear that He is the Bread of Heaven. The bread of Heaven is “He”
which comes down from Heaven and gives life to world. The Bread of Heaven is eternal
without expiration of form our purpose.
(John 6:34-36) – The people of the multitude posture themselves verbally claiming that they
want the life giving bread Jesus-Messiah has presented. The Messiah continues His explanation,
stating clearly that “I am the bread of Life”. The statement is precisely spoken, meaning that
“He is literally the (bread) Life”. The Messiah is not suggesting that He will lead them to Life.
He is clearly saying in the literal sense, He is Life. Anyone that comes to Him and believes Him,
will never hunger or thirst (again) for Life.
He is preparing them to understand how literal their engagement must be. The people must be
willing to respond to Him in the same manner they responded to natural bread. He expects
them to make the same sacrifices, walking away from their occupations and homesteads to
chase after the life in Him.
They must accept more than the general concept of His offer to give them life, the Son of God
wants them to digest His truth like consuming natural food. Natural bread is assimilated into
the physical body. To have everlasting life the recipient must become one with Him.
Offended by their carnal response to Him, He pushes back, challenging their demand for more
because they have seen Him and still do not believe.
