Top Mistakes with Management Systems

         Understand how nonconformances and
            opportunities for improvement will strengthen
            your business’ processes.
         Accredited third-party certification with
oversight can improve the bottom line.

     11. Poor communication with an auditor. Make
sure you understand your certification body’s
audit process – ask for documentation. Clarify the
dates and times of the audit schedule with the
auditor and be sure to clarify questions during the
audit. Get a copy of their report and call them if
you need help resolving any issues – before,
during, and even after an audit.

     12. Weak internal auditing performance.
        Strengthen your internal audit team’s
        performance by shadowing your certification
body’s audit team. Consider attending an
external lead auditor, internal auditor or
communication skills training course to learn how
to ask appropriate questions. Also, create an
        understanding with management on the
appropriate time needed to complete an effective
audit. Internal auditing, like top management
involvement, must be a commitment, not an
        afterthought.

     13. Not understanding your certification body’s
corrective action timeline. Be sure there is a
clear understanding on the time allotted to make
corrective actions. Know the timing around:
