PREFACE

International standards have been in existence for
many years. The highest adoption has been
overseas, but with increased global competition and
marketing, certification is increasing in popularity
within the U.S. and North America. More and more
companies are mandating that their suppliers be
certified. The early adopters quickly discovered the
global standards provide proven tools that can help
them more effectively manage their business,
regardless of the size or industry. A robust
     management system includes disciplines and
processes to manage the entire business to provide
products that meet customer and regulatory
requirements, while conforming to one of the globally-
     accepted standards.

Implementing a standard is just one of the many
components for certification. Companies must also
understand the responsibilities and expectations that
     go along with it.
This book was written to provide a general
     understanding of the internationally-accepted
standards, the certification process and accredited
     versus non-accredited third-party certification. Also
included are effective tips on maintaining and
continuously improving a management system and
     common industry terms.
