Learning and Training Opportunities

FGM’s ongoing commitment to staff training was active in FY2017.
First off, FGM continues to place intern training and mentoring for licensure as a valuable piece of
our careers. The Professional Development Committee continued to research the best offerings
and study materials available for our interns preparing for the Architectural Registration Exam.
During 2017, it was determined the previous materials, Black Spectacles, were no longer the best
available study materials. FGM now offers Study guides and Flashcards from Brightwood and PPI
as well as online question bank (QBank) subscriptions from Brightwood. The hope of FGM, in
providing these support materials, is to make it as easy as possible to pass the exam. As a result,
through the course of 2017, FGM again had a couple of intern architects pass the A.R.E. and
become licensed Architects. We want to congratulate Michelle Zupancic and Danny Matchett
for conquering this monumental task in 2017.

The Northern Region held a field trip to the International Masonry Institute’s local training facility to
view masonry and tiling details first hand. FGM staff was shown various masonry details and
different masonry wall mock-ups to help understand the physical characteristic of what we detail
in our documents. During the tour, IMI’s staff fielded questions and discussed current masonry
practices. The tour was a great ‘hands on’ experience for all the attendees.
