DECADE: 1970s
The '70s have always inspired me. This decade represents a time of freedom, freedom
of expression and identity as an Indigenous person. It was not until 1978 that
Indigenous people in the US were legally allowed to practice our traditional customs
again, under the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. My artwork acts as a method
of healing from this inherited trauma. My pieces express both the pain of these
experiences but also the beauty in their transcendence.
Ties that Bind, is a soft sculpture of corded bundles made from textile waste. These
seemingly endless ropes are binding together generations of inherited knowledge, as
well as trauma. Embedded is a piece made from handwoven textile waste compressed
into Kenaf fiber, showcasing the complexity of history, time and memory.
