We are using a pre-cut mat for our “test mat.” I usually set aside mats
                                                                                     that are dirty or paint-spotted for this purpose.

                                                                                     This is a 12”x12” mat with an 8”x8” opening. The idea
                                                                                     is to shift the work around in the mat to see what the best
                                                                                     composition is. Can you see the difference in the two
                                                                                     positions? The one on the left is slightly higher in the mat
                                                                                     opening. Look carefully - the differences are easy to spot.


































           The arrangement on the left shifts the work down so there is
           more room on the top. I personally prefer this one because it
           seems more balanced and less crowded at the top. I like the
           way the Asian stamps form a subtle focal point, particularly
           with the graphite marks


           Even if we decide not to use this black collage practice sheet
           as a finished composition, it’s good practice to view it in a
           test mat.
