We are using a pre-cut mat for our “test mat.” I usually set aside mats
that are dirty or paint-spotted for this purpose.
This is a 12”x12” mat with an 8”x8” opening. The idea
is to shift the work around in the mat to see what the best
composition is. Can you see the difference in the two
positions? The one on the left is slightly higher in the mat
opening. Look carefully - the differences are easy to spot.
The arrangement on the left shifts the work down so there is
more room on the top. I personally prefer this one because it
seems more balanced and less crowded at the top. I like the
way the Asian stamps form a subtle focal point, particularly
with the graphite marks
Even if we decide not to use this black collage practice sheet
as a finished composition, it’s good practice to view it in a
test mat.
