Page 57 - Creating Whimsical Characters Using Simple Wood and Paper Forms, Wire, Paperclay, and Encaustic Medium
P. 57
This is the form used to make the owl king. It is a smaller version
of the armature created for our player owl.
This is a close up of our player owl.
Characters with delicate wings and/or tails usually
have to be done in two or three stages. In the first
stage, I covered the armature with a thin coat of
paperclay. If the wet paperclay makes the wings
heavy, I wrap paper tubes and/or pieces of dowels in
wax paper and use them to prop up the wings and
help them hold their shape until they are dry.
Once the clay is dry, the
wings are frozen in place
and quite sturdy.
In the second phase of
sculpting, I added all the
detail work like feathers
and claws and tails. I just
misted the dry areas with
water and added new wet
paperclay as needed.
