Page 53 - Creating Whimsical Characters Using Simple Wood and Paper Forms, Wire, Paperclay, and Encaustic Medium
P. 53

The first sculpture we wanted to do was a gargoyle chess piece
called Checkmate. We wanted to play around with a non-traditional

chess set. We selected the famous Checkmate play from Harry

Potter, and I started sketching designs for possible characters.

When I’m designing paintings, I create very in-depth patterns in

             Photoshop.

But I work very differently when I’m working in 3D. I usually just
have a rough sketch and the armature when I’m sculpting.

After I do some sketches, Gerry and I talk about how to build the
armatures. I make the wings out of wire, when applicable, and

Gerry does all the armature building.

The armature can be a very simple design, like one of the small
wooden people forms used for the chess pieces, or a complex
design with woven wire wings like our players – Spike and Owl.
