I wanted Checkmate to have gargoyle players.

I liked the idea of having a dragon and an owl playing. Both have a

reputation for being very smart, so they would
definitely be excellent chess players.

I wanted the owl to be a

poor loser and the dragon
to be a cocky winner. I

also wanted their kings to
carry many of their
characteristics while not

being “mini-mes”.
