Science Y3/Y4 – Weather – week 8
WEATHER - RAIN
Truth to Teach (Source)
To appreciate God’s amazing creation of water and its cycle.
To remind the children that God is in ultimate control of the weather.
To learn how rain is formed.
To use a rain gauge to measure rainfall.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review briefly the last half term’s work and the test.
2. Let the children use their Bibles to read Genesis 1:9-10; discuss the fact that God made
the right amount of water at the beginning of creation and this is recycled again and
again. Read the fact sheet to give the children a sense of wonder about God and his
creation of water.
3. Let the children use their Bibles to find the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 18:41-46, giving them
a brief background of the story. Let the children see again that God is in ultimate control
of the weather, yet through his prayers, Elijah saw a change in the weather.
4. Show a chart of the water cycle or build up a picture on the board with the children. Talk
about condensation and evaporation.
5. Show the children a rain gauge and set it outside to measure the rainfall over a period of
time. Perhaps a graph could be drawn to show this.
6. If it is a wet day lines could be drawn around puddles then the lines could be observed
after a period of dry weather to see how the water has evaporated.
7. The number and size of raindrops can be compared by putting absorbent paper outside in
a heavy storm and on a drizzly day. The raindrops can be drawn around and compared.
8. Let the children complete the worksheet.
9. Let the children discuss the importance of using water carefully as we have to pay for it
to be cleaned before we can use it. Show a water bill.
