WEATHER - MEASURING WIND 2
Truth to Teach (Source)
To introduce the Beaufort Scale for measuring the strength of wind.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons.
2. Let the children suggest ways of measuring the strength of the winds from a breeze to a
hurricane.
3. Introduce Sir Admiral Beaufort and his work on the Beaufort Scale. Some children may like
to look his name up on the internet to find out more about him.
4. Let them complete the worksheet before going outside to measure the strength of the wind.
5. Some children may like to design their own machine, e.g. putting a plastic pot or plate on a
stick and counting how many times it spins around in a minute.
6. Review the main points of the two lessons on wind.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children will hopefully have a greater understanding of the effects of invisible forces which God
has created. They should be able to recognise the effects of wind and appreciate the benefits and
dangers of different kinds of wind, recognising instruments used to measure it
