Science Y3/Y4 – Weather – week 1
WEATHER
Truth to Teach (Source)
God has power to control every kind of weather condition.
Definition of weather – the condition of the air at a certain time.
To learn that the earth is surrounded by air made up of colourless gases. Air presses in all
directions.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Introduce the topic on weather by either showing pictures of different kinds of weather,
or by showing newspaper weather reports, or by reading the story in Luke 8:22-25,
illustrating Jesus’ power over the storm.
2. Ask the children for their definitions of weather before introducing the one above.
3. Explain that the earth is surrounded by an ‘ocean’ of air called the atmosphere. Establish
how much the children know about the gases which make up air (almost four fifths of
nitrogen, one fifth of oxygen, plus other gases such as argon, carbon dioxide).
4. Let the children find out more about air pressing from all directions through performing
the experiments on their worksheets.
5. Gather the class back to discuss their conclusions. Some may like to draw pictures of the
experiments.
6. Remind the children of the story of Noah, the flood and the rainbow, the sign of God’s
covenant. Encourage the children to be grateful for the variety of weather we enjoy and
God’s promises to us.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
Whilst we do not always understand why we have certain kinds of weather, we know that God is in
ultimate control of the weather.
