Science Y3/Y4 – Weather – week 2

                                    WEATHER – MEASURING TEMPERATURE

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To show the children that God has placed the earth at the right distance from the sun to give
              us heat and light.

To learn how the sun heats the earth and how we measure temperature.

To look at different kinds of thermometer.

To make a sundial to tell the time using the sun.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review the main teaching points of lesson 1.

              2. Using a picture of the planets orbiting the sun, show the children that the earth has been
placed by God in exactly the right position for the earth to receive the right amount of
heat and light. We believe that it is the only planet which can support human life.

              3. Talk about the sun’s rays passing through the atmosphere to heat the earth. Share facts
about the sun as on the worksheet.

              4. Discuss how we measure heat. Show different kinds of thermometer – maximum and
minimum, clinical, etc. Give the children opportunity to read the scales.

              5. Talk through the questions on the worksheet.

              6. Show a sundial, asking if anyone knows what it is and how it works. Let the children make
their own after completing the worksheet.

              7. Gather at the end of the lesson to review the lesson. A large class graph could be made
to record the temperatures over a week.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

For the children to realise more of the wisdom of God in how he created the universe. Hopefully,
each child will be able to read a thermometer and understand how the temperature of the air is

        measured by various instruments.
