Science Y3/Y4 – Weather – week 4

                                         WEATHER - MEASURING WIND 1

        Truth to Teach (Source)

For the children to learn that wind is moving air and that it is invisible but we can see the signs
of it. Compare this to the work of the Holy Spirit which is referred to as a wind in Acts 2.

To introduce a variety of instruments used in the measurement of wind.

To learn that we refer to the direction the wind comes from.

To learn eight points of the compass.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review the previous lessons.

              2. Show pictures or real instruments used to measure the wind, e.g. wind- sock and
                   anemometer.

              3. Discuss what the wind really is and ask the children to share the effects of wind, e.g.
trees blowing, smoke rising, clouds moving, kites, waves on the sea. Talk about different
strengths of wind from a breeze to a hurricane.

              4. Let the children find Acts 2 in their Bibles to see who is compared to the wind.

              5. Ensure that the children know that we note which direction the wind blows from. Go
through the eight points on the compass.

              6. Go outside to set a compass and note the direction of the wind. Some children may like to
blow bubbles and note the direction they blow.

              7. Use a wind-sock made out of a plastic bag or stocking tied to a pole. This will show the
direction from which the wind blows. Talk about the importance of wind socks at airports.

              8. Let the children complete the worksheet using dictionaries to look up the words –
                   hurricane, tornado and whirlwind.

              9. Some children may have time to find out about how windmills work.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children will hopefully have a greater understanding of the effects of invisible forces which God
has created. They should be able to recognise the effects of wind and appreciate the benefits and
dangers of different kinds of wind, recognising instruments used to measure it.
