Science Y3/Y4 – Weather – week 3
WEATHER – DAYS AND SEASONS
Truth to Teach (Source)
To show that the earth is not at right angles to the sun. It is tilted so the earth receives
varying amounts of heat from the sun at different times of the year. As a result we have
seasons. Genesis 8:22
Different countries have different weather conditions and times for day and night as a result of
the earth being tilted.
To learn to record temperatures and to read graphs to gather information.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the main teaching points of lessons 1 and 2.
2. Using a picture of the planets orbiting the sun, remind the children that the earth rotates
around the sun but show them, using a torch and ball, how the earth is tilted so that
different parts of the earth receive varying amounts of heat and light.
3. Discuss why the two hemispheres have day and night at opposite times.
4. Talk about the four seasons we enjoy and the difference in weather in each. Read
Genesis 8:22. Ask if God has kept that promise.
5. The children may like to draw pictures to represent the four seasons.
6. Show the children the temperature worksheets, explaining the main points.
7. Gather back to review the lesson and to share any discoveries the children have made
about the seasons, the earth rotating around the sun, etc
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
It is hoped that the children will recognise more of the wisdom of God in creation.
They should be able to use thermometers and understand the importance of recording accurately
and reading graphs to provide us with useful information.
