Science Y3/Y4 – Weather – week 6

                                                WEATHER - CLOUDS

        Truth to Teach (Source)

To learn how clouds are formed.

To learn about different kinds of cloud.

To appreciate the effect clouds have on our weather.

        Way to Work (Means)

              1. Review previous lessons.

              2. Read Exodus 13:20-21 and 1 Kings 18:44 asking the children to guess from these
passages which aspect of weather is to be studied today. Briefly discuss the passages.

              3. Ask the children how much they already know about cloud formation.

              4. Show pictures of different kinds of cloud – cirrus, cumulus, stratus, nimbus, etc. Explain
that they are named according to their shape and height above the earth’s surface.

              5. Explain that experts can predict the weather from the cloud types and the speed at which
they are blown by the wind.

              6. Ask the children if they know what condensation and evaporation mean.
(Condensation occurs when water vapour, or invisible water, changes into liquid.
Evaporation occurs when a liquid changes into vapour.) Compare to having a hot bath in a
                   cold bathroom.

              7. Show the children the experiment with a bowl of boiling water covered with cling film on
which are resting a few ice cubes. Let the children observe the hot water evaporating on
to the cling film then condensing and dropping back into the bowl. Explain that this is how
                   clouds are formed.

              8. Let the children complete the worksheet.

              9. Gather back to review the lesson.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children should understand how clouds are formed and the importance of them indicating the
weather we have. They should know some of the names of different kinds of cloud. From the Bible
passages the children should again appreciate that God is in control of the weather
