Luke 17:11-19 Healing of the ten lepers, only one of whom said thank you

Romans 12:10 ‘Honour (respect) one another above yourselves.’

We should honour and respect one another by being polite.

The use of ‘thank you’ and ‘please’

            Way to Work (Means)

                 1. Review the previous lesson.

                 2. Show the children flashcards with ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ written on them.
Discuss why these are such important words.

                 3. Read the story of the ten lepers in Luke 17:11-19. Remind the children of other
words we read in the Bible about loving and respecting one another. It pleases
God and others when we are polite.

                 4. Discuss how it feels when we give people something and they do not say thank
you. Let each child collect an object from around the room to give to a friend
                     to practise saying thank you.

                 5. Talk about prefacing requests with ‘Please may I…?’ Let the children think of
                     lots of examples.

                 6. Ask how many children thank their parents at home, e.g. for a meal, for reading
them a story. Ask them how many thank their parents or friends for lifts or for
a visit to their home. Do they thank their teachers and helpers at the end of a
                     school day?

                 7. Continue to work on politeness in the coming weeks.

                 8. Let the children complete the worksheets. More able children could write some
                     more polite questions and answers.
