Y1 Summer Term Part 1, CW Lesson 6

                                          WORDS INSTEAD OF ‘SAID’

            Truth to Teach (Source)

To encourage the children to extend their vocabulary.

To offer words other than ‘said’ to be used when speaking or writing
                    conversations.

            Way to Work (Means)

                1. Review the previous lessons.

                2. Write some sentences on the board using the word ‘said’ repeatedly then
contrast this with a short section from a book in which other words are used or

read Matthew 15:32-34. Let the children identify the words used instead of
                    ‘said’

                3. Reassure the children that ‘said’ is a good word but often we use it too much

when there are so many other words we could use to make our speech and
                    writing more interesting.

                4. Read other sections from books to illustrate the use of other words, asking the

children to put up their hand when they hear any of the following words:-

asked, replied, shouted, whispered, answered, called

                5. Let the children make up sentences using the above words.

                6. The pupils could either complete the worksheet or write some sentences using
the above words and any others they can think of, e.g. yelled, declared,
screamed. Some children may find more in their reading books.

            Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

                1. The children will be further equipped to extend their vocabulary in speech and

                    in writing.
