The children stand in a large circle with a ‘catcher’ in the middle. The leader calls out one of the
following: -
• Runner beans - children run around the circle
• Haricot beans - children hop around the circle
• Broad beans - children make themselves wide
• String beans - children hold hands
• Dwarf beans - children crouch down
After a while the leader calls out ‘baked beans’ and all the children must scatter to the edges of the
room before the catcher catches them. The winners are those left in after a set time.
Chain Geography
The children sit in groups around the hall. One group says the name of a country in Europe then each
group has to say one until a group cannot think of any more.
Compass Points
Eight or sixteen compass points are marked around the room. The class is in the centre but have to
run to whichever point the leader shouts. The last to arrive is out.
Balloons
Names of European countries are put on pieces of paper in balloons. The balloons are burst by
teams of children who then have to mark the nations on a large map. The first teams to complete
their tasks are the winners.
An imaginary campfire could be set up to gather around to sing foreign songs to finish the evening.
