GAMES FOR EUROPEAN SLEEPOVER
Ship Shore
Explain that we often have to travel by boat, train or plane to visit other countries. In this game we
begin on a ship and we are travelling to foreign places.
The children stand at one end of the hall on the ‘ship’. The opposite end is the ‘shore’. One side of
the hall is the ‘port’ and one side is the ‘starboard’. When the leader shouts one of these the children
run to it. The last one to arrive there is out. Other commands are: -
• ‘Captain’s coming’ - salute
• ‘Scrub the decks’ - bend to scrub
• ‘Fire!’ - stand still
• ‘Aeroplanes’ - crouch down
• ‘Climb the rigging’ - pretend to climb the ropes
The last person in is the winner.
Foreign Ladders
The children sit facing one another in pairs, in a ladder formation, with their legs out in front of them.
Each pair is given the name of a European country. When the leader shouts their country they get up
and run around their respective team and back to their place. The first one to sit back down gets a
point for their team. If ‘Europe’ is called, everyone gets up.
Eskimo Game
The children stand in small circles around the hall with one person in each holding a bean-bag.
Eskimos throw seal skins. The thrower throws the bag whilst calling the name of the person who is to
receive it. If he drops it he/she sits down. It is thrown to the next person and so on. The circle with
the most people standing after a set time is the winner.
Continents
The children sit in their continent groups around the hall. The leader chooses one continent as
‘catchers’. The leader calls the names of two ‘continents’ that have to change places without being
caught. The group with most players left at the end wins.
Beans Game
Explain that all over the world people have different diets. In some countries, beans are very
popular.
