Science Y5 – God’s Amazing Matters – lesson 6
                                            THE WORLD OF WOOD

        Truth to Teach (Source)

 Other products produced from trees

             Man-made boards

             Wood for the future

        Way to Work (Means)

             1. Review the previous lessons on wood.

             2. Show a display of items made from trees, eg soap, glue, ink, paint-thinner, clothing made of
rayon, rubber, cork, paper, card. There are over 5,000 products which we get from trees.

             3. Explain that about a tenth of trees are cut down and altered, or processed, by heat, pressure

                or chemicals.

About a tenth of trees are grown for paper. Let the children use books or the Internet to find
out more about how paper is made from trees. Alternatively, the information sheet could be
given for the children to précis the process of paper-making. Less able children could write
sentences about the pictures on the first worksheet.

             4. Gather back to share information.

             5. Review the uses of wood – buildings, furniture, paper, chemicals, clothes, etc.
Talk about deforestation in some parts of the world which is having an adverse effect on
economies of different countries. Wood is a renewable resource but trees must continue to
be planted as others are felled. The final worksheet could be given for homework to
summarise the advantages of using timber for a wide range of purposes.

            6. Remind the children of the importance of recycling paper, card, etc to help to preserve the
earth’s resources. Pray for wisdom as we use God’s resources.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
            1. The pupils will have gained much factual information about the uses of timber.

            2. It is hoped that the importance of recycling will have been impressed upon them.

            3. Pupils should have a greater sense of gratitude to God for his amazing creation.
