Science Y5 – Living and non-living things – week 1
KINGDOMS CREATED BY THE KING
Truth to Teach (Source)
Jeremiah 32:17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by
your great power and outstretched arm.”’
Nehemiah 9:6 ‘You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest
heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas
and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes
worship you.’
To acknowledge God’s creativity and sense of order in the universe.
To review the seven processes that distinguish living from non-living things.
To identify living things to be classified into five main kingdoms.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Introduce the topic by showing pictures or a DVD of a wide variety of living things to give
the children a glimpse of God’s vast creation.
2. Read the above verses, reminding the children that some people have different views on
creation, but whilst we should respect other people’ opinions we should gather evidence to
form our own views.
3. Ask the children to estimate how many kinds of insects, birds and mammals there are in the
world.
There are around: 1.5 million species of animals
1 million species of insect
9,000 species of birds
4,000 species of mammals
4. Discuss the need to classify these species in order to study them in an orderly way. Remind
the children of the verse in Genesis 2:19 where Adam names the animals. We have more
authority over things if we can name them. God is a God of order so classifying things brings
order out of chaos.
Discuss where else in life we see classification, e.g. classes in school, libraries. Where in our
lives would classification bring order? E.g., DVD collections, football cards, stamp
collections.
5. Review work in Term 1 by revising the seven processes which distinguish living from non-
living things. (Mrs Nerg)
