Vertebrates

Good nervous system, keen senses
Usually have a large brain
Five groups – mammals, fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles
a) Fish - live in water
- most breathe by gills
- covered in scales
- have fins
- cold-blooded
- include sharks
b) Amphibians - live in water and on land
- moist skin
- cold-blooded
- lay eggs
- include frogs, toads, newts and salamanders
c) Reptiles - most lay eggs on land
- scaly skin
- cold-blooded
- include snakes, lizards and crocodiles
d) Birds - covered in feathers
- lay eggs
- warm-blooded
- have lungs
e) Mammals - feed young on milk
- warm-blooded
- have lungs
- most give birth to live young
- covered in hair or fur
Invertebrates
No backbone
Cold-blooded
E.g. a) Annelids - includes earthworm
- no skeleton
- move by stretching or contracting
