IDEAS FOR STRUCTURED AND FREE WRITING
Weeks 1-10
Spring Term Part 1
Week 1: A New Term / Year
Growth, Maturity: Let the children share dreams they would like to see fulfilled in the
coming year, eg learn to swim, ride a bigger bike, improve their reading and make more
friends. Give some headings, e.g. dreams at home, dreams at school, dreams at church,
dreams at various clubs, etc to which the children belong.
Week 2: Writing a story in which the author learns a lesson
Growth –Maturity – Fruitfulness: God’s plan is for us to grow in wisdom and become more like
Jesus. This is a process of learning, notably from our ‘mistakes’, and lasts a lifetime.
Consider together the sorts of lessons the children have learned wisdom through, some of
these may be ‘funny’, others may be more ‘serious’. Some less able children may appreciate
using a lesson the whole class have learned together.
• How did it happen?
• How did you feel?
• What did you learn?
Weeks 3 & 4: Writing a longer story
Creator and Creation: God created in reality, but he gives us the ability to create places,
characters and happenings in the stories we write.
This is an opportunity to write a longer story. The children should decide on the title of
their story once it has been written. The story might link with the children’s project or arise
from a story that has been enjoyed.
Part one: The setting
Explain that authors have to decide on the setting for their stories and they introduce the
reader to it near the beginning, e.g. a forest, seaside, country, city, home
Questions to decide: -
o How do you move into the new setting? Through a wardrobe? Sitting on a chair or a
rocking horse? Going on holiday?
o What is it like in the setting?
