SPRING CLEANERS
THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Truth to Teach (Source)
Genesis 2:7 ‘The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of
life, and the man became a living being.’
Mark 15:37 ‘With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.’
God breathed the breath of life into Adam
To study the respiratory system
The importance of clean air for our lungs
To answer questions relating to breathing
Way to Work (Means)
1. Pair the children to measure the difference in their chest measurements when they are breathing out and when
they are breathing in. (There should be about 3-5 cm difference.)
2. Gather back to share results.
3. Read and discuss the above verses. God has designed our bodies that we should breathe from the time we are
born to the time we die. This is because the lungs supply the blood with oxygen and oxygen is vital for life.
4. Talk about the lungs ‘cleaning’ the blood of all waste gases so that fresh oxygen can be put in.
5. Let the children read the worksheet information in pairs then ask them to devise three or more quiz questions
from it to ask the rest of the class after a set time.
6. Gather back to let the children ask their peers questions to reinforce the learning of the material.
7. Talk about our responsibility to steward our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit. Discuss the dangers of inhaling
tobacco smoke and other unclean gases and substances. The children could complete the word-search on air
pollution from:-
www.lung.ca/children/index_kids.html
8. Alternatively, some children may like to write a poem based on the acrostic of ‘breath’ or ‘respiration’.
9. End by praising God for his creativity seen in our own bodies.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The pupils will have gained more factual knowledge about the respiratory system.
2. They will have seen the dangers of smoking and inhaling other unhealthy substances and be recognising the need
to steward their own bodies for God.
3. They should be gaining an increasing sense of wonder at God’s creation of their bodies.
