BITS AND PIECES
Truth to Teach (Source)
Psalm 139:13-14 ‘For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you
because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful.’
1 Corinthians 12:21-25 All parts of the body are important and have a function.
The creation of teeth, nails and hair show God’s attention to detail in the creation of our human bodies.
The function of incisor, canine and molar teeth.
Caring for our teeth.
Growth and care of finger and toe nails.
Survey of hair colour.
Care of our hair.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Read the above verse and see if the children agree with it after studying the project this far. Read and discuss the
1 Corinthians 12 passage as it applies to our physical bodies and to the church/class/family.
3. Explain that we are going to study the ‘bits and pieces’ of our bodies today but though they may appear less
significant than the heart, lungs, etc, we would not be so well equipped for life without them.
4. Divide the class into three and release them to different activities on hair, nails and teeth. E.g.
• a survey of hair colour throughout the school, producing a large graph with the results
Fascinating facts:-
Hair on the head grows for between two and six years before being replaced. In the case of baldness,
the dormant hair is not replaced with new hair. Men loose about 40 hairs a day. Women lose about 70
hairs a day. Hair grows at about 15 cm each year.
• finding out about nails and how fast they grow, how we care for them, etc
Fascinating facts:-
Finger nails grow nearly 4 times faster than toe nails. Nails are made of horny skin.
• a survey of how many fillings children have in their teeth, taking each class in turn and producing a
graph of the results
Fascinating facts:-
Adults have 28 teeth with 4 wisdom teeth.
Nearly two thirds of each tooth is embedded in the jaw.
5. Gather back to share findings.
