Science Y6 – Marvellous Me – lesson 16

                                                   SECRET SENSES

Miracles: Mark 7:31-37 Healing of Deaf and Mute Man
Matthew 9:27-34 Healing of Blind and Mute Man

              Our five senses

 Visit of a blind or a partially hearing person to share their challenges and how they seek to overcome them.

        Way to Work (Means)

             1. Review the previous lesson.

             2. A topic on ‘Senses’ is covered by the reception lessons so they could be asked to share about the five senses
with the class. Alternatively, ask the children if they know which the five senses are (sight, hearing, taste,
                  smell, touch).

             3. Talk about the importance of the senses in our daily lives; how they help us to explore and enjoy God’s world.

             4. Introduce a blind or partially hearing person for them to share the ways in which they seek to overcome or
compensate for their disability. Hopefully, Louis Braille will be mentioned as someone who had a concern for
blind people and invented Braille writing.

If no-one is available to invite into school, the story of Helen Keller could be read to the class.

             5. If time allows, the children could divide into groups to read and discuss the miracles of healing above. Talk
                  about Jesus’ compassion for people.

             6. Depending on the activities used to illustrate the senses, notes and or pictures could be drawn, or cards made
and written to disabled people known to the children.

             7. End by thanking God for our senses and praying for people who have lost one or more of their senses.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

             1. The children will have been reminded of the importance of our five senses to explore and enjoy God’s world.

             2. Hopefully, they will have recognised the compassion in Jesus for people who are disabled and have a desire
for the Holy Spirit to give them a greater measure of compassion for such people.
