RUMBLING TUMS
THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Truth to Teach (Source)
Psalm 119:103 ‘How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth.’
Psalm 34:8 ‘Taste and see that the Lord is good.’
To some extent ‘we are what we eat’
We have a responsibility to watch over our spiritual and physical appetites
To study the digestive system
Talk briefly about healthy foods
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Read and discuss the above verses to compare physical and spiritual appetites. Discuss whether reading or
watching unhealthy material affects our lives. Ask what is meant by the verse in Psalm 34.
3. Discuss whether the food we eat affects our bodies. Are we really what we eat? Create a list of healthy foods
with the children.
4. Let the children have the information sheets to write about the ‘journey’ of a meal.
This may overlap with an English lesson. Let the children select a healthy lunch and describe its journey through
the body as a story. It can contain factual detail but also some humour. Discuss ideas before letting the children
begin.
5. The work could be completed in another lesson or for homework. Time needs to be set aside to read some of
them at a later date.

Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will have experience in using factual information to create a story.
2. They should have a basic understanding of how food is digested and the importance of eating healthy food.
