HEALTH AND HEALING
Truth to Teach (Source)
Luke 5:15 ‘…crowds of people came to hear him (Jesus) and to be healed of their sickness.’
Jesus is the one who has the power to heal us of all our illnesses. He sometimes works directly but sometimes
through doctors and nurses.
However healthy we seek to be, sometimes we become ill.
Prevention, surgery, medicines
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the last lessons.
2. Conduct a class survey of children who have had broken bones and/or had the common illnesses of influenza,
measles, chicken pox, mumps, whooping cough, tonsillitis, etc.
3. Talk about the treatment needed to deal with these diseases. Ask if anyone prayed first. Did the children see a
doctor or a nurse, take medicine or tablets?
4. Ask the children what other things can harm our bodies – cancer, asthma, heart disease, kidney problems,
rheumatism, etc
5. Ask the children if they have any relatives or friends who have been injured in wartime or who have been born
with physical disabilities or have been injured as a result of accidents.
6. Discuss why we see so many diseases and accidents in our modern society despite new medicines, etc being used.
(speed causing car accidents, stress, sin issues such as guilt and unforgiveness which affect health, smoking,
drugs, sexually transmitted diseases)

6. Read the above verse about Jesus healing all diseases. Discuss why we are not seeing such healings in great
numbers today. If possible, read some stories of miraculous healings, e.g. books by Roland and Heidi Baker
working in Mozambique.
7. Discuss ways in which everyone can take reasonable precautions to try to remain healthy. E.g. eating healthily,
taking exercise, getting enough sleep, using sun-tan lotion and wearing sun-hats in hot weather, having
vaccinations to prevent certain diseases, having regular eye tests, wearing glasses if prescribed, taking
prescribed medicines, wearing appropriate clothing (including cycling helmets when cycling), not watching or
listening to unhealthy material which causes fear, etc.
8. Let the children complete the worksheet.
9. Pray for anyone the children may know who is ill at this time.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will realise that sickness is very common but, as Christians, we should pray first but recognise that
Jesus works through the medical profession too.
2. They should be postured to offer to pray for people who are sick.
3. The children should also recognise the responsibility they have to take reasonable precautions in caring for their
bodies.
