             Increasing sounds

 Use of megaphones, telephones, stethoscopes, ear trumpets

        Way to Work (Means)

Equipment: Yoghurt pots, string, stethoscope, megaphone, telephone

              1. Review the previous lessons.

              2. Read the story of the healing of the deaf and mute man in Mark 7:31-37. Discuss the
challenges of being deaf from birth. A person who is hard of hearing may be invited into
school to talk about the challenges of deafness.

Refer to Helen Keller who was deaf, blind and dumb.

              3. Talk about occasions when we need to increase sound, eg speaking in a large hall,
addressing a big crowd, sports’ events.

              4. Remind the children of the importance of never shouting into anyone’s ear for fear of
                     damaging their ear-drum.

              5. Show the children a megaphone, stethoscope and telephone and talk about how sound is
magnified and/or carried through these instruments. Some children may like to discover
more about them on the Internet.

              6. Show the children how to make yoghurt pot telephones:-

                     a) Make a hole in the base of two yoghurt pots and thread string through them

                     b) Knot the string at both ends in the pots.

                     c) Put the pot to your ear and let your friend put the second pot to their ear with the
string taut. The vibrations of one person’s voice will make their pot shake. The vibrations
are passed down the string to the other pot.
