P. 14
Experiment: Put a blindfolded child in the middle of a circle. Children around the edge
take it in turns to make a sound, e.g. whistle, clap, shout. The blindfolded child has to
identify the direction of the sound.
It could be repeated with the blindfolded child wearing a muff over one ear.
6. The children could devise experiments of their own to test the hearing in each of their
ears. Warn them never to shout in anyone’s ear as this can damage the ear-drum.
7. Gather back to share about the experiments and to suggest ways of how they could be
written up. Discuss whether they were fair tests.
8. Remind the children of how we can take care of our hearing by avoiding very loud noises,
etc. Talk briefly about hearing aids, loop systems, etc for the hard of hearing.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children will have learnt more about the workings of the human ear and of the importance of
caring for our ears.
