2. Let the children work in pairs to find out all they can about Viking longboats from
books, internet, etc.
3. Using the questions on the worksheet let the children supply information to answer
them. Acknowledge the skill of the Vikings in making their boats which survived the
roughest storms. Talk about ‘running the oars’, Leif Eiriksson and Eric the Red.
4. Show the BBC Zig-Zag video on longboats. Refer to the shields. These could be made
in Art/CDT lessons to hang on a large model of a longship.
5. Read the poems about the Vikings or, alternatively, use them for work in an English
lesson.
6. Let the children complete the worksheet then carry on with their own personal topic.
(Most of this work will be done for homework over the weeks.)
Learning for Life
The pupils should have gained more background knowledge of the Vikings and their skills in
boat-building. They should also be gaining experience in gathering and recording historical
information.
