number of participants grew, becoming a movement organized by private citizens
which began voluntarily without governmental provocation.
Increased tensions between the two countries led to the breaking away from
the GSOMIA agreement. GSOMIA(General Security Of Military information
Agreement), an agreement between Japan and Korea, was signed on 11 November
2016. The contents of this agreement states that Korea and Japan can share
valuable information with each other for security and defence purposes without
the interference of the United States through designated signatories obligated by
both parties. It was meant to act as a counterweight to the security issues posed
by China and North Korea. But on 22 August 2019, the Blue House announced its
intention to activate Article 21 of the GSOMIA, requiring a nation to give a 90-day
termination notice to the other signatories should it intend to terminate its
agreement. This notice was repealed on 22 November 2019, a day before the
scheduled renewal of the agreement’s validity. Also, the number of participants in
the boycott was estimated to be at 63% on 5 July 2019, which shows the huge
impact of the boycott on Korea-Japan relations.
Therefore, we are willing to learn more about the current situation and delve into
the political impacts in Korea due to the boycott on Japanese products.
