results that we received proved wrong. One of the interviewees, who came to SKIS
only one year ago after spending her whole life in Korea, said that she preferred
Instagram over Facebook because of the types of users that she saw on both apps.
She thought that there were too many weird people on Facebook, thus causing
her to feel uncomfortable when using the app. On the other hand, she believed
that Instagram was a better way of sharing one’s lifestyle with more people and
feel safe doing so. Other interviewees had similar thoughts. Due to Facebook’s
recent data scandals, there have been some major trust issues when using the app.
Thus, causing results like so.
Furthermore, from the chart in Figure 2, results show that most students who prefer
Instagram over Facebook prefer Instagram for the following reasons: Instagram has
more diverse features such as stories, stickers, and higher quality pictures, and that
it was easier to use, more so than Facebook. From this, we concluded that since
Instagram provides more “fun” and “easy-to-use” features, students would be more
inclined to using this, thus making it more popular than Facebook, which does
provide features, but not as diverse as those provided on Instagram.
From both the survey and interview results, we were able to conclude that although
the high school student body was made up of students of different backgrounds,
the preference of the apps did not differ, and we could assume that the popularity
of an app is based on how it can be used, and how convenient it is when using it,
and not what trends the country follows. Thus, although most students from Korea
tend to prefer Facebook, the results of the survey on SKIS high school students
proved contradictory.
5. Conclusion:
During our research, we came across many surprising results that proved some
stereotypes wrong. As we moved into the 21st century, both Instagram and
Facebook have become one part of our daily routine, making this research more
