The event is run annually to raise funds for a variety of charities which have included Marie Curie,
McMillan Nurses, Save The Children, Guide Dogs for the Blind and many more. This year the 22
clubs raised money for Alzheimer's Research, an illness which has affected many in the Mid Ulster
area.
While the Mid Ulster league is dominated by 2 clubs, the Charity Shield with its different for-
mat gives the other clubs a better chance of pulling off a shock win. When the draw is made, the
team which finished lower in the previous year's league is given home advantage and in addition
a handicap system is in place so that the further down a club finished in the league they receive
a bonus of up to 12 shots on their opponents.
This season's semi finalists saw 3 less fancied clubs in Kildress, Cookstown Parochial B and
Lafarge compete with Cookstown Parochial A, one of Ireland's top clubs and clear favourites to
complete a league and Shield double, and a possible All Cookstown Parochial final. In the semi
they met Kildress and were leading comfortably but in the last 2 ends across the 3 mats they took
they took their foot off the pedal and were guilty of a little showboating and conceded 12 shots to
lose the game.
In the other semi Parochial B met Lafarge who controlled the game to finish comfortable win-
ners. The Kildress-Lafarge final was a keenly contested with little separating the clubs and the
lead changing on a regular basis. In the end it was Kildress who just squeezed through by 2 shots.
The competition, after prizes, raised £1,000 for the Alzheimer's chastity.
Bowls and Bowling Mats for sale
Bowls and Bowling Mats for sale
I was notified that a club had a mat for sale but in the interim it was sold.
With the magazine being a quarterly, there can be a while between is-
sues and a number of mats that I have been notified of have been sold
before printing.
If anyone is on the lookout for a secondhand mat (preloved is the
in phrase), or wants to sell one, just let me know and I will add you to a
register that could greatly speed up linking buyer to seller when mats
become available. It’s the same with bowls and I have a lady looking for a set of Thomas Taylor
Ace’s or Professional’s Size 1, 2 or 3.
