Alan’s opponent clawed away at the deficit to level at 10-10 with three ends to go but 27
this time, Alan finished the stronger of the two and took his first singles points 13-11.
This also gave Herts 2 bonus points from the singles discipline. In the Pairs Pauline Taylor
& Jeanette Gayler were 4-6 behind after five ends. The margin was still 2 shots at ten ends.
Pauline and Jeanette couldn’t repeat their performance in the opening session and went on to
lose 8-14. Audrey Fowler & Tony Gayler dropped 4 shots on the first end and that was still the
difference after seven ends. From there Bucks pressed their advantage home to 18-8. Session
three ended with Bucks 4 game pts + 2 bonus pts Hertfordshire 4 game pts + 2 bonus pts
The final session of the day was the reverse triples and fours. Jill Oakes, Peter Griffiths
& Brian McGivern bounced back from their earlier loss. They went quickly into a 6-0 lead after
four ends but Bucks struck back with a run of five ends to see them go ahead 7-6. The Herts
trio responded well and held a 4 shot advantage with the last end to play and a cautious last
end resulted in a single shot dropped and an 11-8 win. Adrianne West, Margaret Hare & Mary
Chadd led 4-0 before being pegged back to 5-5 after seven ends. Despite not scoring again,
they held their opponents to a string of seven successive singles and finished 5-11.
John Taylor, Roy Duke, Robin Quarterman & Brian Fowler led 3-0 after two ends. The
Herts foursome notched two 3 shot counts which was not enough to prevent their opponents
winning 9-16. Cherry Nolan, Graham Yates, Margaret Regan & Ted Nolan grabbed a point with
a terrific last end score of 4 shots. They were 5-9 down after the penultimate end. Their last
end heroics ensured that Herts scored points in all four disciplines. Session 4 result: Bucks 5
game pts + 4 bonus pts Hertfordshire 3 game pts + 0 bonus points
Playing Buckinghamshire away in the first fixture of the Inter County Championship was
a tough start but a 13 point return is the same as the equivalent match last year when Herts
finished second in the qualifying group.
Hertfordshire County Singles
Hertfordshire County Singles
Michael West won the County Singles Championship at Elm Court
today. Runner up was Steve Hipperson. The third and fourth places
went to Tony Gayler and Brian McGivern. A highly competitive field of
24 bowlers were organised in 8 groups of 3 players each with the group
winners progressing to the quarter finals.
The remaining four group winners were Dave Murphy, Brian
Hatherly, Alan Spicer and Jeanette Gayler. Michael will represent Hert-
fordshire at the National Singles Finals in April. Steve Hipperson will probably
also be allocated a place at the finals and possibly Tony Gayler as well.
Hertfordshire County Fours
Hertfordshire County Fours
A rink made up of bowlers from four different clubs; Jill Oakes (Greenwood Park), Pauline
Taylor (Harpenden), Brian McGivern (Cuffley Hall) and Darren Stanford (St Margaret's) won
the Hertfordshire County Fours Championship. The runners up were Liz Bradley, Dennis
Paddison, Gordon Burrow and Ken Murray from Harpenden. The winners of this competition
will represent the county at the National Finals in April. The runners up are almost certain to
receive a place at the Finals as well.
Third place went to Jeanette Gayler, Roy Duke, Peter Griffiths and Tony Gayler who
were representing St Margaret's. They overcame tough opposition from Letchworth (Marion
Cooper, Pamela Westrope, Alan Hare) together with Rebecca Nightingale of St Margaret's in
the 3rd/4th place playoff. In some previous years, Hertfordshire has been allocated three
places in the National Fours Finals.
The nine teams that entered were divided into groups of three with the winners of each
group progressing to the semi final stage while the two best placed runners up played off for
the final place. The unlucky second placed four from Cuffley Hall went out of the competition
only on countback of the number of ends won.
