30 This was Donegal's first title after being bridesmaid
on numerous occasions and few did not take great
pleasure in seeing Fred Aitken pick up a trophy
after 20 years as Zone Convenor.
The first half was close overall but it disguised
a mixed set of results. On mat 1, the Donegal rink
of D Montgomery, R Graham, M McClintock and M
Montgomery had their chances to pick up shots or
save shots but on the day the Armagh rink of E
Hunter, E Lavery, R Cassels and E Smyth took their
opportunities and won comfortably 13 - 3.
IIBA Chairman David Sterrit (left) Mat 2 was the reverse with the Armagh rink of
presenting the trophy to Fred Aitken A Crozier, L Milligan, H Agnew and D Marshall
never getting to grips with the Donegal rink of P Lyt-
tle, K Duggan, L Finlay and V Patterson. It was a case of how wide the margin would be and in the
end the 17 - 2 win for Donegal was richly deserved. The Armagh rink of M Wright, M Hobson, D
Agnew and M Cassels got off to a slow start against S Bell, L O'Kane, P Friel and A Gilfillan and
were 7 - 0 down, Gradually they clawed their way back into the game to finish 10 - 9 down.
Donegal therefore had a 7 shot interval lead. Many queried if this would be sufficient to give
the Donegal ladies a chance of claiming the trophy. As events unfolded it soon became apparent
that the trophy was destined for a new home. On mat 1, the Donegal rink of S Alexander, A Mc-
Clintock, P Bustard and R Crawford gave a convincing performance against S Corrigan, E Mc-
Donald, I Doone and C McMillan as they produced a 13 - 3 win.
On mat 2, the situation did not get any better for the holders with T Jacob, S Finlay, I Duncan
and R McDonnell claimed an 18 - 3 win over A Crozier, S Whittle, L Straine and F McNally bene-
fitting from a count of 6 on one end. It was only the Armagh rink of S Garvey, S Minish, S White
and P Beattie which claimed a win for Armagh against M Beattie, R Hamilton, J Buchanan and E
Doherty as they led 6 - 5 when the game was called off. It was an emotional Fred who accepted
the trophy from Chairman David Sterrit with few if any not delighted to see him do so.

MITCHELSTOWN EMERGE ON TOP
The Carrigaline Community Bowls Club staged the final session of their Annual
Licensed Triples Competition in the local Community Hall. The tournament
was once again a great success and attracted 100 teams from all the leading
Bowls Clubs over a wide area in the Cork Zone.
In the semi-finals, Mitchelstown’s Eleanor McEvoy, Hazel Payne &
Hazel Foley halted the progress of Midleton’s Marie Triggs, Kay Savage &
Tony O’Shea. Douglas Community School’s Betty McCarthy, Clare Cremen & Tony McCarthy
progressed to the final by beat Watergrasshill’s Eileen Walsh, Majella Conlon & Liam Conlon.
In the final scheduled for nine ends both teams finished up playing 12-ends which included
two dead ends and one sudden death extra end after both teams finished level. Douglas Com-
munity school opened up with a single and a nip and tuck game then ensued until two consecu-
tive two’s gave Mitchelstown a 7 - 4 lead going into the last end. At this point D.C.S. struck back
with a three to level the score at 7 all. However, it was Mitchelstown’s Eleanor McEvoy, Hazel
Payne & Hazel Foley who scored on the sudden death extra end to take the title.
The competition was sponsored by Carrigaline Community Association and the prizes
were presented to the winners by Michael Wall, the Carrigaline Community Association’s Chair-
person.
