WORTHING AND DISTRICT 35
CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
This year's Worthing & District Short Mat Bowls League's Champion of
Champions tournament started with the round robins of the Singles on
Saturday morning, the Pairs on Saturday afternoon and the Triples on
Sunday morning with the winner of each formats two groups playing in
the Finals on Sunday afternoon.
The Pairs and Triples Finals
were contested over 12 ends and
played alongside each other and were very different in per-
formance. The Pairs resulted in a runaway victory for Anne
McGregor & Gwen Steers of Heene.
The Heene pair scored a 2 on the 1st end, with East
Worthing replying with a single on the second, and that was
the closest the scores were with Heene rattling up 13 shots
in the next 7 ends without reply, which included a 'hot shot'
6 on one end, the final score being Heene 18 and East Wor-
thing 6.
The Triples was a much closer run affair, between
Rustington’s John O'Brien, Jean Taylor and Ray Farr and
Heene’s Stig Anderson, Pat Kingston and Terry Wakeham. Pairs Champions Gwen

it to the last end and scored a 3 on the 11th end and another
2 on the 12th and final end, making the result
Rustington 14 Heene 9.
The Singles Final was played as the first to
18 shots and was an absolute cracker of a game
with Jan Bearne from West Worthing playing ex-
tremely well, causing Andy Williams from Wor-
thing to play a lot of saving shots, the score after
11 ends was 11 each.
Andy scored a 3 on the 12th end, Jan
replied with a 4 on the 13th end and after Jan
played her final wood of the next end she was
holding a match winning 3 shots. Andy had 1

played his last wood with a bit of run hoping to
knock the jack off the mat.
The jack stayed on and the nearest wood
was Andy's so the score was now 15 all. Not
wanting to put himself through that sort of pres-
sure again, Andy scored 3 on the 15th end and
thus became the Singles champion for the first
time - well done to all of the competitors, and
thanks to everyone for their help in making this
another super weekend.
