38 TERRY TROTT
TROPHY
The Terry Trott Trophy was
played at the Cloakham
Lawns Bowling Club and at-
tracted 32 entries; four from
Dorset, three from Somer-
set two from North Devon
with the rest from East
Devon.
Each pair played their
three Round Robin games
in the morning and then
after lunch came the knock-
outs for the top two in each
of the 8 groups, this year
over 10 ends. 10 out of the
Front row David Hayler, Robert Bartlett, Organiser Chris 12 clubs who had entered
Young, Pam Bartlett & John Lyon. the competition were repre-
Back row Lorraine Axtell & Bob Weafer sented in the last 16.
The tournament has a tradition of slow starters finding their form as the day progressed and
going on to win. Last year almost half of the pool winners fell at the first knock-out stage and for
the first four years of the tournament the winners were club players rather than the county or in-
ternational players, and each had been a runner-up in the pool stage. This year the knock-out
stages generally went in favour of the county or international players; what enthralled the spec-
tators was the quality of the play rather than any nail-biting finishes. Most runners-up got no fur-
ther than the last 16.
Cerne Abbas had three pairs in the last eight and two of these, The Gruesome Twosome,
the best performing runner-up. In the quarter finals they romped home 18 - 4 over the Beer Sep-
tuagenarians. Cerne Abbas Hasbins could not manage the same feat of reaching the semi-finals
and lost out 6 - 11 to Upottery P&J. However the third Cerne Abbas team, Stretch & Braces did
make it to the semi’s with a 15 - 3 victory over Colyton “C”. Completing the semi-final line-up
Winkleigh Spitfires beat Oddcombe Odds “n” Sods by 8 shots to 4
The Cerne Abbas Gruesome Twosome, June Balbinski and Anna Booth had won two years
ago but this year they met newcomers, Winkleigh Spitfires, Lorraine Axtell and Bob Weafer, and
lost 12-4. Cerne Abbas Stretch & Braces were previous semi-finalists and they fell at the same
stage to Upottery P&J, Pam Bartlett and John Lyon, these two playing so well that the final two
ends were unnecessary.
The final was also marked by the quality of the bowling with all four players showing their
skills. However, Pam Bartlett and John Lyon however were on top form winning the first 5 ends
to establish a solid lead 10 - 0 lead, including a full house four on end four. They then continued
to keep the pressure up to come out as worthy winners by 12 - 2, having won all of their seven
games.
The Terry Trott Trophy is awarded on the combined results of two pairs based on aggregate
points scored. Hitherto the winners have had a clear point margin; this year the Cerne Abbas
pairs had an aggregate 17 points; the Upottery Pairs also had an aggregate 17 points so the tro-
phy was awarded based on shot difference to the Upottery pairs, John & Pam, and Robert Bartlett
and David Hayler. Congratulation to all the competitors, but especially to the four who provided
us with a well fought final.
